How Mahindra's Passion for Automotive Excellence Changed the World

Established in 1945 as a jeep manufacturer, Mahindra & Mahindra today stands as a global company that specialized not only produces cars, but also provides, farm equipment and financial services. Yet their passion is producing the highest quality cars in India.

Mahindra’s journey began in the early 1940’s when K.C. Mahindra visited the United States and met Barney Roos, an American automotive engineer who helped to design the Willy Jeep. The K.C. Mahindra was inspired by his meeting with the famous engineer, and upon his return to India set out to design an indigenous jeep for the harsh and rocky roads of India. IN 1945, Malik Muhammed and K.C. Mahindra established Muhammed & Mahindra. The company changed their name to Mahindra & Mahindra and began manufacturing jeeps in 1949.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s Jeep was a huge success in India, and their company grew rapidly. In 1969, the company began to export utility vehicles to Yugoslavia. Since then they have established a strong and undeniable international presence. IN the 1970’s Mahindra began exporting SUV’s to Africa. Today Mahindra & Mahindra (also called M&M) has auto manufacturing plants in Italy, China, and the United States. They also have successfully established marketing rights in Greece, South Africa, Brazil as well as with the Ford Motor Company in the United States. Their portfolio of vehicles range from compact trucks, to rugged indigenous jeeps, to the luxurious Scorpio SUV.

With its feet solidly placed in the international automotive market, Mahindra & Mahindra has over 1 million employees all over the world. Its annual earnings are over 7 billion dollars, with a majority stake in REVA Electric Car Co., is now poised to establish itself in the electric vehicle market. The multinational company accounts for well over 50% of all SUV’s in India and was recognized by The Reputation Institute as one of the to 10 Indian companies in the world.

Mahindra & Mahindra have met with great success not only in India, but all over the world. Their passion is driven by the idea that India can produce the best automobiles in the world. Through resiliency, and hard work, the original dream of K.C. Mahindra lives on.
